More about high blood pressure

What is high blood pressure?

High blood pressure, or hypertension, occurs when the force of blood against the walls of your blood vessels is consistently too high. This puts extra strain on your heart, requiring it to work harder to pump blood throughout your body.

How blood pressure is measured

Blood pressure is recorded using two values:

  • Systolic pressure: The higher number, representing the pressure in your blood vessels when the heart contracts and pumps blood.
  • Diastolic pressure: The lower number, indicating the pressure in your blood vessels when the heart is at rest between beats.

Blood pressure categories

  • Normal blood pressure: Systolic below 120 mm Hg and diastolic below 80 mm Hg.
  • Elevated blood pressure: Systolic between 120–129 mm Hg with diastolic below 80 mm Hg.
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure): Systolic of 130 mm Hg or higher, or diastolic of 80 mm Hg or higher.
